A wonderful addition to Vancouver's Eastside. Located on the 3900 block of Fraser Street, Bâtard Boulangerie & Cafe Moderne will be a French style Bakery, and Cafe. With the talents of Chris Brown (Rise Artisan Bakery) as back of house, and Elsie Born, customer favourite from Finest at Sea (4675 Arbutus Street) as front of house. This is sure to be a new social hotspot for everything 'food'. Hours are as follows 7 days a week
7:30 am to 6 pm
And for those of you who have asked for more details about us:
- a hybrid of different cultures and styles……
- a roughly oval loaf with the baguette as sibling
- a story by Jack London
- a unique individual of questionable parentage…
Chris Brown owner/baker of “Rise Artisan Bakery” and former owner of “Ecco il Pane Bakery” (Vancouver’s first artisan bakery) has teamed up with restaurateurs and owners of “Finest at Sea” - Bruno and Sally Born and their daughter Elsie Born, former manager and super customer favourite from Finest at Sea on Arbutus. She is reprising her role at our little boulangerie - to create our vision of a great neighbourhood bakery and cafe
We’ve peeled back the layers of a 100-year-old building, keeping some great exterior features and opening up the interior to create a space that has a small café on one side and bakery/epicierie on the other.
Where? 3958 Fraser near King Ed.(Beside Graze and Earnest Ice Cream)
Although impossible to confine ourselves to a single genre… the name and theme are French “campagne”. (Chris’s previous Italian and North American artisan repertoires will be well represented -keeping the faithful happy and cheerfully creating our own bakery legitimacy!)
Our rustic baking will be showcased together with a great selection of “The Farm House Cheeses” along with a specially curated selection of charcuterie from our good friends at “Oyama” - all of this accented with Bruno’s Best house made preserves as well as Gold and Silver winning artisanal marmalades from Chris’s “The Bitter End”.
The café will feature a tight menu of Bruno’s sandwiches, soups, salads and toast bar, available in-house or “to-go” paired with great Umbria coffee.
With a love of both yeasted and naturally leavened breads look for big levain loaves, dense rye breads, Market Loaves and an eclectic selection of regional French sweet items…. along with (of course!) some old favourites.
